Pima tennis girls defeat Tombstone

THATCHER – The Pima girls tennis team defeated Tombstone at Eastern Arizona College on Thursday, 6-3.

Pima was led by No. 2 junior Maria Liegenfeld who defeated Tombstone No. 2 sophomore Kiersten Schilling, 6-3,6-3. Liegenfeld also teamed up with No. 4 freshman Olivia Paull to defeat the duo of Tombstone senior Hailey Sulger and junior Rhiann Pham in doubles, 8-3.

Pima No. 3 senior Beckie Peterson defeated Pham in singles, 6-1,6-3. Other singles wins for Pima included No. 5 freshman Bentlee Hoopes over Tombstone No. 5 sophomore Skyler Mazzanti, 6-4,4-6,6-2; and No. 6 freshman Ambrosia Johnson over Tombstone No. 6 senior Jaliyah Haynes, 6-3, 6-2. Hoopes and Johnson also teamed up to defeat the Tombstone duo of Mazzanti and Haynes in doubles, 9-7.

For Tombstone, No. 1 senior Jazmine Gil-Urias defeated Pima No. 1 senior Allison Lunt, 6-4,6-2; and No. 4 senior Hailey Sulger defeated Pima No. 4 freshman Olivia Paull, 6-4, 6-4.

Pima (2-0 division, 2-0 overall), will next travel to face the Willcox Cowgirls (1-0 section, 2-1 overall) on Friday. Willcox is coming off a 5-4 victory over Safford on Thursday.
