THATCHER – The Pima boys tennis team soundly defeated Tombstone at Eastern Arizona College on Thursday, 8-1.
Pima was led by No. 2 sophomore Leland Thompson, who defeated Tombstone No. 2 junior Diego Nunez, 6-0,6-1. Thompson and senior Keanu Hansen teamed up to defeat Nunez and Caleb Thomason in doubles, 8-6.
Other wins for Pima included No. 3 junior Owen Lunt, 6-4,5-7,6-3, over Tombstone No. 3 senior Myan Moreno; and Pima No. 4 junior Calin Paull defeated Tombstone No. 4 freshman Adrian Bonilla, 6-0,6-0. Lunt and Paull also teamed up to defeat Moreno and Bonilla in doubles, 8-4.
Pima No. 5 sophomore Carter Bryce defeated Tombstone No. 5 sophomore Adam Cloud, 6-0,6-2; and Pima No. 6 sophomore Tucker Wilkens defeated Tombstone No. 6 sophomore Garret Van Wesep, by forfeit, 1-0,1-0. The doubles match for Bryce and Wilkens was also won by forfeit, 1-0,1-0, over Cloud and Van Wesep.
Tombstone’s lone victory was No. 1 senior Caleb Thomason over Pima No. 1 senior Keanu Hansen, 6-1,6-0.
Pima (1-1 division, 1-1 overall), will next travel to face the Willcox Cowboys (1-0 section, 3-0 overall) on Friday. Willcox is coming off an 8-1 victory over Safford on Thursday.
