Pima School District to be closed Thursday due to unknown illness

Jon Johnson File Photo/Gila Herald: Pima was hit the hardest locally with the walkout but still only had two early release days as its Teachers returned to work Tuesday. On Thursday, walkout organizers told teachers to return to class and that the walkout was finished after the Arizona Legislature agreed on a new budget and Governor Doug Ducey signed legislation granting a 19-percent teacher raise to take place over the next three years.

PIMA – Students in the Pima School District will have an early jump on its spring break as all of the schools will be closed Thursday due to an “unknown illness.”

Pima runs on a four-day week and already has Friday off and next week the school is closed for spring break.

On Wednesday night, the district alerted parents and issued a release concerning the closure.

“As you know, the nation is being gripped by the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19),” the release stated. “We have received a report of possible exposure to an unknown illness for some students at Pima Elementary School. Parents of those students have received separate notification. Out of an abundance of caution, while the county health department determines if this, in fact, an incidence of coronavirus, Pima Schools will be closed for Thursday, March 12. Information about extracurricular activities will come in subsequent notifications.”

The school had already put in extra hours to sanitize common surfaces and had alerted students to increase hand washing to help slow the spread of any illness.

To date, there have been no positive cases for COVID-19 in Graham County.
