Pima honored with boys and girls Region Player of the Year and Coach of the Year

PIMA – Both Pima Roughriders’ basketball teams went undefeated in 2A East Region play this year, and the honors reflect that standing.

For the boys, Pima head coach Cliff Thompson was named Region Coach of the Year, and senior point guard Tim Salyer was named Region Player of the Year. 

Jacob Brimhall and Kaleb Blair were also named to the All-Region 1st Team, which also included locals Shawn-Michael Chavez and Maddux Martinez from Morenci. 

Sophomore Grant Ashby (Pima) was named to the All-Region 2nd Team and was joined by Christian Mutengela, of Morenci.

Kenton Skiba, Reggie Stewart, and Trent Wiltbank, of Pima, were Honorable Mentions, along with Derek Saenz, of Morenci. 

Gabe Escobedo, of Miami, and Brady Overson, of St. Johns, were named co-Region Offensive Player of the Year, and Preston Wilson, of St. Johns, was named the Region Defensive Player of the Year.

For the girls, Pima head coach Roy Corona was named Region Coach of the Year, and Ashlie Sherwood was named Region Player of the Year. Saydee Allred was named Region Offensive Player of the Year.  

Ashlie and Aubrie Sherwood were named to the All-Region 1st Team with teammate Saydee Allred. Julianna Aguilar, of Morenci, also was named to the team. 

Ashlynn Charlson, of Pima, and Destanee Marquez, of Morenci, were named to the All-Region 2nd Team. 

Nevaeh Grant and Samantha Pippo, of Pima, and Devanie Medina and Zenayah Cortez, of Morenci, were Honorable Mentions.

Karli Haws, of Round Valley, was named Region Defensive Player of the Year.
