Obituary for James ‘Jim’ Whitmire

James M. “Jim” Whitmire, of Safford, passed away in the early morning hours of Feb. 22, 2021, at his home.  He was born on Dec. 22, 1939, in Willcox, Arizona to Noel Burke and Carrie Alice Whitmire.  Jim was the youngest of six children.

Jim’s family moved to the Gila Valley during his childhood years.  He attended Safford schools, graduating from Safford High School.  After graduation, he had a few small jobs in the Safford area.  In 1962, he made the decision to join the United States Army.  In 1964, he was honorably discharged and returned to Safford.

In 1966, Jim obtained employment with the U.S. Post Office in Safford, where he worked for many years.  On July 2, 1983, Jim married Alyce Hall.  They enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends out of state and seeing a few of the National Parks along the way.  Jim retired from his career at the Post Office in 2001.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, and hunting with family and friends.  He also enjoyed talking on his CB radio to people that he never met in person but who he considered friends.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
