Man runs into highway traffic while attempting to flee police

SAFFORD – A man put his life in danger and those of motorists on the highway and pursuing police when he ran into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 70 on Jan. 21. 

According to a Safford Police report, Robert Lee Sandoval, 29, ran from officers through the Arby’s restaurant. Sandoval then reportedly ran into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 70 before being tackled by a Graham County Sheriff’s Office deputy in the westbound lane near the McDonald’s restaurant. 

Sandoval was fleeing officers who attempted to arrest him on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a theft/shoplifting charge. Sandoval was arrested on his warrant and booked into the Graham County Adult Detention Facility.  

The $250 bond was voided the following day after Sandoval made his court appearance and he was released from custody with the warrant quashed.
