SAFFORD – A late-night trip to Circle K ended with a man being assaulted during a robbery attempt, according to his statement to the police.

An officer was dispatched at about 1:23 a.m. on Sunday, July 15, to meet with the victim. According to a Safford Police report, the incident occurred in the 900 block of U.S. Highway 70 at about 1:20 a.m.

The victim, who had scrapes on his elbows and knees along with dirt on his pants which was consistent with being in a struggle, informed the officer that his wife asked him to make a run to get some items from the Circle K at the intersection of 11th Avenue and U.S. Highway 70. After getting the items, including a sandwich, a small wine box and two lottery tickets, the man started to walk back to his residence when he was accosted by two unknown males.

The victim said the men demanded him to hand over his wallet and after he said he didn’t have anything on him they threw him to the ground and started kicking him while attempting to reach into his pocket. The victim said he left his bag of goods and managed to run across the highway, where he watched as the men casually walked westbound along the highway.

A search of the area was negative for the suspects and for the bag of goods the man said he purchased from Circle K.

Officers continued to patrol the area throughout the night but were not able to locate the suspects or where the incident reportedly occurred. The case was forwarded to the department’s detectives and is pending until more information regarding the suspects is learned.
