THATCHER — Eastern Arizona College, in partnership with Arizona State University and Clubes de Ciencia Arizona, is hosting a free, one-week program for area high school students interested in a biochemistry career. The program will be held Monday, July 8, through Thursday, July 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Math/Science Building Biology Lab, Room 412, at Eastern Arizona College. Students will conduct research in a professional lab, participate in recreational activities and workshops, and receive lunch each day.
“This is an opportunity for high school students to conduct hands-on research aimed at solving real-world problems,” said Dr. Phil McBride, dean of instruction with EAC. “If you are interested in a STEM-related career, this is a great program for you.”
Graduate and post-doctoral students will teach this intensive course using topics suggested by industry inventors. Students will discover how drugs are developed to treat human problems and will learn how to “crystallize” Iysozyme and “obtain” its molecular structure. Computational methods will be used to visualize 3D protein structures for the discovery of possible inhibitors.
