WASHINGTON, D.C. — GIFFORDS PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulated JoAnna Mendoza on her election to serve as the representative for Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. From 2007 to 2012, former Congresswoman Giffords represented a similar district that included parts of Tucson and its surrounding area in the U.S. House.

“I am thrilled that Arizonans have made their voices heard and will be sending my friend and a true gun safety champion, JoAnna Mendoza, to Washington. Arizonans across the political spectrum can trust her to listen and lead. I saw up close how hard the congresswoman-elect worked on this campaign, and I know she will fight every day for a safer future for our state,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “JoAnna will put the safety of Arizona families first, and I can’t wait to work with her to save lives in our hometown of Tucson and across the country.”

GIFFORDS PAC was an early supporter of Mendoza’s bid to turn AZ-06 blue, announcing an endorsement in August 2025. In the final days of the election, former Congresswoman Giffords rallied with Mendoza in Tucson and urged Arizonans to vote.

Throughout the cycle, former Congresswoman Giffords and GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown appeared with Mendoza on the campaign trail, highlighting the importance of standing up to the gun lobby and framing gun safety as a major crime-prevention and public-safety issue for Arizonans. In the final days before the election, Congresswoman Giffords campaigned alongside Mendoza to get out the vote in Arizona.

Mendoza was part of a near-total Democratic sweep of Arizona’s congressional delegation this election cycle.
