GREENLEE COUNTY – The Greenlee County Search & Rescue team worked through the early morning hours Thursday to help a hunter in destress.
According to the Greenlee County Search & Rescue, a call was received just after 12 a.m. regarding a hunter in distress in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest who was stuck near Sheep Saddle, roughly 50 miles north of Morenci.
Along with Greenlee County SAR, an Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue helicopter responded, as well as Greenlee County EMS and the Alpine Fire Department.
The DPS helicopter located the hunter after 3 a.m. but the terrain was too rough and dangerous to extract, according to Greenlee County SAR. A ground team was then sent in to assist the hunter and the DPS helicopter guided them with the best route to take out as soon as daybreak occurred. The Air Rescue helicopter then lowered a medic to another location nearby and extracted the hunter, who was then flown to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center for dehydration.
All personnel left the rescue area after 6 a.m. and were back into the Morenci area by 8 a.m.
