GRAHAM COUNTY — The Gila Valley is gearing up for an unprecedented, valley-wide celebration this Fourth of July to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. Coordinated by Graham County, local municipalities, and community sponsors, the “Gila Valley 250” promises a full day of patriotic pride, family-friendly activities, and community tradition from dawn until the final firework fades.

“This is a milestone year for our nation, and we wanted to bring the entire community together to honor our heritage,” organizers shared. From morning fishing derbies to a massive evening concert and fireworks extravaganza, here is your complete guide to the historic July 4, 2026, festivities.

Early Morning Traditions

The celebration kicks off before the sun rises with events designed to bring neighbors together.

  • 52nd annual Moe Villalba Sr. Fishing Derby (6 – 11 a.m.): Co-hosted by the Sons of the American Legion, Swift-Murphy Post 32, and Post 95, this beloved annual tradition returns to the duck ponds at the Graham County Fairgrounds. The event is completely free for children, featuring prizes across multiple age categories and complimentary refreshments.
  • Thatcher Fire Department Wake Up (5 a.m.): Residents across the valley will receive a patriotic, early-morning wake-up call courtesy of the Thatcher Fire Department to officially trumpet the start of Independence Day.
  • The People Parade (5:30 a.m.): A strictly non-commercial and non-political family tradition, the People’s Parade features decorated bicycles, walking families, and local community entries like the Gila Valley Freedom Band. No registration is required—just show up and celebrate.
  • Patriot Pancake Breakfast (6 a.m.): KeyHole Properties and the Eastern Arizona Historical Society and Museum are teaming up to host a massive community breakfast. Featuring pancakes, eggs, and bacon, the event will include a brief patriotic program hosted by the Town of Pima. Elected officials from across the valley will be on hand to serve an expected 1,000 attendees. Donations are warmly accepted.

Note: The 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament originally scheduled for 7 a.m. has been officially canceled due to a lack of signups.
