Gone but not forgotten

Walter Mares Photo/Gila Herald: Rows of white crosses are placed at Veterans Park in Clifton. They are there to commemorate the 2021 Veterans Day observance ceremony which was held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 31. The helmet on the monument was that of Clifton’s Emilio Membrilla who suffered capture by the Germans in the famous Battle of the Bulge in World War II. The American Army won the horrific battle while fighting in deep snow and frigid temperatures. Membrillla was freed and returned home and fortunately lived into a ripe old age. He will be remembered among the many veterans from Greenlee County who have paid the price for America’s freedom.
