THATCHER – The Eastern Arizona College men’s and women’s basketball games against Cochise Community College scheduled for Wednesday night have been postponed due to flood damage to  Eastern Arizona College’s Guitteau gymnasium.

According to a news release from EAC, the basketball games will be played tomorrow at Thatcher High School. The women will play at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Classes normally held in the gymnasium have also been canceled and the wellness center is closed.

According to EAC President Todd Haynie, a water line located in an office on the second floor of the facility burst Sunday night causing the damage.

Haynie said most of the flood damage affected other areas of the facility but the gymnasium floor did suffer a bit of damage as well. A crew is currently on campus assessing all of the damage, and the college should know the full extent and cost to repair in the next few days.

According to EAC Director of Marketing and Public Relations Kris McBride, the cleanup crew is still determining the air quality and various other aspects that have to be addressed prior to the gymnasium reopening.

“Right now, until further notice, all classes in the gym are canceled and the wellness center is closed,” McBride said. “

Students or the general public who have more questions can call McBride at 928-428-8320.

“We may be looking at different options to see how we can (hold the classes) but for right now the gym is closed until further notice,” McBride said.

EAC’s next currently scheduled home game is Feb. 13 versus Phoenix College.
