SAFFORD – The tinsel, lights, and holiday parties fill our December schedules. We spend time with family and friends and enjoy rich, delicious banquet-portioned indulgences. And then . . . ?

Researchers have found that at least 10 million people in the United States experience “seasonal affective disorder” after the holidays. According to Dr. Charlynn Ruan, a clinical psychologist and founder of Thrive Psychology, “many people are distracted and busy during the holiday, but in January, that doesn’t happen. There are no decorations and music. And the bills also start coming in.”

Fellow psychologist Anthony DeMaria agrees. “There’s a sense of what may be coming next,” he said. “There can be a spent feeling and not having enough emotional resources”.

Many of us fight these post-holiday blues by renewing our commitment to the things most important to us – exercising more, organizing our home, and spending more time with our families. Even if someone isn’t particularly into New Year’s resolutions, January is when we often make plans for the new year and think about how we spend our time. It can be a little overwhelming to try to focus our energy on the year ahead while we pack away all the decorations.

To help make sense of all this, ladies of the community are invited to a “Fresh Start” luncheon to learn how to reduce stress, prioritize, and set goals from a Biblical perspective. This event will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, from noon to 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Safford, 1109 S. 7th Ave., directly across from Safford Middle School. The luncheon and seminar are free, but seating is limited. Sign up online at https://www.fbcsafford.org/ by Jan. 5. For more information contact Suzanne Menges at 928-961-0915.
