MORENCI – A firearm situation at Morenci High School was handled without incident Thursday after a student forgot he had the handgun in his car.

According to Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Jason Monjaras, the school’s vice principal was notified at about 10:30 a.m. The vice principal then informed SRO Monjaras, and the student was interviewed.

At that point, the vice principal was given permission to search the student’s car, and upon inspection, a Ruger P98 handgun was located and taken into possession by the Sheriff’s Office. The student allegedly said he had the handgun with him earlier while he was scouting the desert area with some friends and had forgotten that he left it in his vehicle. He said the handgun previously belonged to his grandfather and that it had been gifted to him.

The firearm was seized as evidence but came back clean. The student faces school disciplinary action and possible criminal charges for bringing the firearm onto school grounds.
