Eagles, Riders, Tigers, and Vandals vie for tourney title

THATCHER – The 47th annual Eastern Arizona Girls Holiday Basketball Tourney continues in Guitteau Gymnasium on Thursday, Dec. 28.

The pairings are Morenci (5-6 overall) versus Safford (2-10) in Game 9 at 8:30 a.m., Fort Thomas (9-6) vs. Valley Union (7-9) in Game 11 at 11:30 a.m., Saint David (13-0) vs. Miami (8-2) in Game 13 at 3 p.m., and Pima (8-2) vs. Thatcher (3-7) in Game 15 at 6 p.m.

The Miami freshman accounted for 25 of the Vandal points. Safford sophomore Hannah Shade also netted 25 points, but both players had 10 fewer than the tourney individual game scoring record set in 1986.

Final round pairings on Friday, Dec. 29 decide seventh place at 8:30 a.m., fifth place at 3 p.m., third place at 11:30 a.m., and champion at 6 p.m.

The Dec. 27 opening round results were Thatcher over Fort Thomas 42-36 in Game 1, Saint David over Morenci 35-33 in Game 3, Miami over Safford 51-42 in Game 5, and Pima over Valley Union 65-13 in Game 7.
