Thatcher to host Safford on Tuesday

THATCHER – The Thatcher Eagles girls basketball team opened the new year with region victories on the road at Tucson Empire (64-12) on Jan. 3 and at home versus the Pusch Ridge Lions on Jan. 5, 37-32.

On Friday, the Eagles (2-0 region, 2-2 conference, 5-9 overall) were led by Jade Griffin down low, who hit 10 of her 12 points in the first half to help give Thatcher the lead at the break, 21-16. 

Thatcher hit a dry spell in the third quarter as the defense tightened. Sophia Estrada (12 points) hit a big 3-pointer in the quarter and then followed it up with another 3 and went 4-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth. 

Macey Carter nailed a deep ball in the final quarter as well to help Thatcher leave victorious, 37-32. 

Thatcher’s Emma Green (3 points) and Kenady Davis (2 points) also got on the board. 

The Lions (0-1 region, 0-2 conference, 8-7 overall) had a balanced scoring attack with Noelle Sunukjian, Hannah Johnson, and Sedona Dietrich all having 8 points each; Sierra Gifford had 4 points, and Alexis Ferbeyre and Chloe Rogers both had 2 points each. 

Thatcher will host Safford (0-0 region, 0-1 conference, 3-11 overall) on Tuesday, starting at 7 p.m.
