Eagles defeat Bulldogs to stay atop 3A South

THATCHER – The Thatcher Eagles (2-0 3A South, 8-6 overall) pulled away in the fourth period to defeat the Safford Bulldogs (1-2 3A South, 7-10 overall) 68-57 in Thatcher on Tuesday night.

The win keeps the Eagles tied atop the 3A South with Tucson Tanque Verde, with a looming date against them at home on Jan. 18.

Previous to that game, Thatcher will get the opportunity to play in McKale Memorial Center at the University of Arizona in Tucson where the UA Wildcats play. Thatcher will face off against Tucson Sabino in that matchup on Monday, Jan. 16, starting at 1:30 p.m.  

However, the Eagles next travel to face Tucson Empire on Thursday, Jan. 12, starting at 7 p.m. 

The Bulldogs will next host Silver, New Mexico, on Wednesday night, starting at 7 p.m.

In other prep action: 

After beating Santa Rita 83-15 on Monday, the Pima Roughriders (5-0 2A East, 13-3 overall) fell to the 3A Valley Christian Trojans, 51-53. Valley Christian is currently the overall No. 1-ranked 3A team. 

The Roughriders next visit the Morenci Wildcats on Thursday, Jan. 12, starting at 7 p.m. 

The Morenci Wildcats (4-1 2A East, 11-7 overall) fell to the Bisbee Pumas, 55-70. 

The Wildcats next host the Pima Roughriders on Thursday, Jan. 12, starting at 7 p.m. 

The Duncan Wildkats (1-1 1A Tucson Southeast, 5-11 overall) defeated the Valley Union Blue Devils 52-22. 

The Wildkats next visit Lourdes Catholic on Thursday, Jan. 12, starting at 7 p.m. 

The Fort Thomas Apaches (2-2 1A Copper, 10-8 overall) defeated the Superior Panthers, 64-43. 

The Apaches next host the Mogollon Mustangs on Friday, Jan. 13, starting at 7 p.m.
