THATCHER – Eastern Arizona College’s basketball teams tipped off their conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 20, with back-to-back home games against Arizona Western College. Fans were treated to intense action as the Lady Monsters pushed into overtime while the men’s team dominated their matchup.
Women’s Basketball: Tough loss in overtime
The Lady Monsters (0-1 Conference, 4-2 Overall) faced a tough start, trailing 14-25 in the first quarter. However, their resilience shone in the second and third quarters as they clawed their way back into contention. Despite their efforts, Arizona Western surged ahead in the fourth quarter, forcing an overtime showdown. In a nail-biter finish, the Matadors edged out a four-point victory, 65-61.
Sophomore Ashlynn Chlarson was a standout for Eastern Arizona, leading with 15 points and 8 rebounds until an injury removed her from the game. Freshman Stephany Goncalves contributed with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. The loss moves the Lady Monsters’ record to 4-2 overall.
Men’s Basketball: Strong second half secures victory
Following the women’s game, the Eastern Arizona men’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance against Arizona Western. The Monsters (1-0 Conference, 7-1 Overall) led by just one point at halftime, 22-21, but came alive in the second half to seal a 58-47 victory.
Sophomore guard Armari Carraway powered the team with 14 points and 7 assists, while Jasyre Robinson dominated the boards with 10 rebounds. The win improves the men’s record to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Looking ahead
Both teams will hit the road this weekend for another tough conference matchup against Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona. The Lady Monsters will look to rebound from their narrow defeat, while the men aim to extend their impressive winning streak.
