Duncan girls face No. 4 ranked Miners on Friday

DUNCAN – The Shane Dunagan-coached Duncan Wildkats host the No. 4 San Manuel Miners as No. 19 on Friday, March 31. The start time is 3:45 p.m.

Also in region pairings this week (March 27-April 1), 31 Saint David visits Valley Union on March 31.

Non-region games include Gilbert Leading Edge at Ray on March 31.

Earlier this week, Ray defeated Duncan 18-5 (5 inn.) on March 27, San Manuel defeated Ray 11-7 on March 28, and Saint David defeated Desert Christian 21-3 (5 inn.) and Valley Union defeated Baboquivari 26-6 on March 29.

South Region Standings

The region standings after March 29 have San Manuel (6-3 overall, 6-1 seeding, 4-0 region) first, Elfrida Valley Union  (5-2, 4-0, 3-0) second, Saint David (7-3-1, 4-1, 3-0) third, Kearny Ray  (8-3, 4-2, 1-2) fourth, Tucson Desert Christian (6-5, 4-3,1-2) fifth, Duncan (2-9, 2-5, 0-4) sixth, and Sells Baboquivari (0-6, 0-6, 0-4) seventh.

To date, San Manuel (4-0) has region wins of 17-3 in five innings over Duncan (March 20), 19-8 in six innings over Kearny Ray (March 22), 23-1 over Baboquivari (March 27), and 11-7 over Ray (March 28);

Ray (1-2) defeated Duncan 18-5 in five innings (March 27), and Desert Christian (1-2) defeated Baboquivari 25-9 (March 22).

The 1A state rankings listed at noon on March 30 had the Top 16 of 23 members as

San Manuel Miners (6-3, 6-1, 3-0)

The Jessica Castro-coached Miners have won six of seven seeding games and list only two tourneys games played through March 28.

San Manuel has seeding wins of 3-1 over Winkelman Hayden (March 16), 17-3 in five innings over Duncan (March 20), 19-8 in six innings over Kearny Ray (March 22), 15-8 over Tombstone (March 24), 23-1 over Baboquivari (March 27), and 11-7 over Ray (March 28). The loss is 1-11 in five innings to Eloy Santa Cruz (March 9).

The two tourney games listed are losses of 2-11 to Kingman Lee Williams (March 3) and 0-10 to Snowflake (March 4) during the 3-day Wickenburg tourney.

Duncan Wildkats (2-9, 2-5, 0-3)

The Wildcats have gone the regulation length once in seven seeding games played thus far, ending in a loss. They have also gone 0-4 in time-limited games during the 2-day Chandler Prep tourney.

Duncan defeated Tucson Palo Verde Magnet 15-5 during six innings (March 9) and San Carlos 14-1 in five innings (March 29). The losses were 1-16 in five innings to Saint David (March 3), 8-15 to Tucson Saint Augustine Catholic (March 7), 3-17 in five innings to San Manuel (March 20), 12-18 to Valley Union (March 22), and 5-18 in five innings to Ray (March 27).

The Wildkats also posted tourney losses of 0-13 in four innings to Pima (March 23), 7-15 in five innings to Tuba City (March 23), 1-15 in five innings to Heber Mogollon (March 24), and 7-18 in five innings to Whiteriver Alchesay (March 24).

Duncan – 14, San Carlos – 1 (5 inn,)

A lot of things fell in place for the Wildkats against the Braves, resulting in a win.

The visiting Braves were retired in order during their initial plate appearance and sent no more than six up during their other at-bats, leaving the bases loaded in the third.

Duncan sent seven up in the bottom of the first and no less than five in the other three innings. Eleven batted in the second and nine in the third. The Wildkats scored twice in the first, seven times in the second, thrice in the third, and twice in the fourth.

For the game, the Wildkats batted .519 (14-27), left six runners on and committed two errors compared to .286 (6-21), six runners, and three errors by San Carlos.

Junior Aubrey Evans batted 1.000 (2-2), senior Ivanna Cano .750 (3-4, double), sophomores Elizabeth Basteen and Echo Lane both .667 (2-3), senior Kyanna Lacey (2-4) and junior Carly Coats (1-2) both,500, sophomore Kayla Contreras .333 (1-3), sophomore Shaylynn Rhoton .250 (1-4), and sophomore Ramia Contreras 0-2 (sac).

In the circle, Ramia Contreras struck out 10 and allowed five hits while facing 22 batters during five innings.

For San Carlos, seniors Ariana Azye and Jaynie Newman both batted .667 (2-3), M. Newman,500 (1-2), and senior Jasmine Reede .333 (1-3).

In the circle, Jones struck out three, walked two, beaned two, and yielded 14 hits while facing 32 batters during four innings.
