PIMA – The Pima Fire Department received a nice increase in its efforts to collect funds for a new fire station on Saturday when Vaughn Grant and Jenna Ferrin of Country Financial presented the department with a $3,000 check.

According to Grant, the funds are made possible through Country Financial’s “Helping Hero’s” program to assist local agencies. The business has presented such a check to first responders for the past four years.

Grant and Ferrin presented the check at a barbecue fundraiser at the current station. The cost to construct a new fire station could be $2 million or more depending on the amenities and funds – including federal grants – available.

Jon Johnson Photo/Gila Herald: The current fire station is too small for newer, larger trucks and has flooding issues.

The plan is to raze the current station and adjacent Pima Library and build a larger replacement station in the same location but elevated to alleviate flooding issues. The library, in turn, will be relocated closer to the Pima School facilities and have a larger space as well.
