Community invited to free lecture on the search for Planet X

By Lori Dugan/EA

THATCHER — The community is invited to attend a free lecture titled “The Search for Planet X” presented by Dr. Will Oldroyd, a postdoctoral research fellow from the NAU Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science. The event will be on Saturday, June 8, from 6 – 7 p.m., at EAC’s Discovery Park – Jupiter Room.

Oldroyd will highlight the latest research and mathematical evidence suggesting the existence of a “Planet X” deep within our solar system. This theoretical Neptune-sized planet is believed to orbit the Sun in a highly elongated orbit far beyond Pluto. The planet is estimated to have a mass approximately ten times that of Earth and could orbit about twenty times farther from the Sun on average than Neptune. It may take between 10,000 and 20,000 Earth years to complete one full orbit around the Sun.

The lecture is family-friendly and free of charge. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a telescope viewing after the presentation.
