Roy Corona named Coach of the Year; Sherwood girls make 1st Team All-State

PHOENIX – If your team goes unbeaten in conference play and then takes the state championship in the most dramatic way, you just might see some after-season recognitions.

Pima girls basketball head coach Roy Corona was named the 2A Conference Coach of the Year. Corona guided his team to a 10-0 conference record and 20-1 season that culminated with Pima’s first state championship in girls basketball since 2003 when they were in 1A.

1st Team All-State

In addition, the Sherwood sisters, Ashlie and Aubrie, were named All-Conference 1st Team, and Saydee Allred was named All-Conference 2nd Team. Ashlie was also the 2A East Region Player of the Year. Besides the Pima players, only one other public school player made either the 1st Team or 2nd Team selections.

Pima Boys Basketball

For the boys, 2A East Region Player of the Year Tim Salyer was named to the All-Conference 1st Team and Jacob Brimhall was named to the All-Conference 2nd Team.

Salyer was the only public school player on the 1st Team, and Brimhall was one of two public school players on the 2nd Team.

3A

In the 3A Conference, Thatcher’s Mia Carter was named to the All-Conference 1st Team, and Olivia Lunt was named to the All-Conference 2nd Team, with Cassidy Wakefield earned Honorable Mention. Carter is also the 3A South Central Region Offensive Player of the Year, and Wakefield is also the 3A South Central Region Defensive Player of the Year.  

For the boys, Thatcher’s Michael Greer earned Honorable Mention.
