MORENCI – Clifton topped the five-team Morenci Recreation Center 5-on-5 basketball tourney on July 25. The championship game had Brick City as the opponent. The game was halted at halftime because of the large margin difference.
Clifton team members, not all residents of Clifton, were Raymond Alvarez, Jedrique Chavez, Noah Chavez, Steven Sean-Michael Chavez, Ruben Leonard, and Steven Pierpont. Leonard and Noah Chavez were co-Most Valuable Players.
Brick City included Joe Anaya, Jose Rodriguez, Brandon Rope, Jeremy Rope, Justin Rope, Alex Russell Jr., and Patrick Stergion.
Other team entrants included One Family with Marvin Dona, Damarae Dosela, Darren Dosela, Roy Moses, Justin Olivar, Michael Olivar, Malachi Rogers, and Michael Rogers; The Rim Runners; and Most Hated.
Each team was guaranteed three games with some being called before the final buzzer sounded.
“It was a lotta games played in a short amount of time,” one participant said.
