Border Patrol agent kills suspect in shootout

SUNLAND PARK, NEW MEXICO – At approximately 6 a.m. (MDT) on Monday, Nov. 4, a U.S. Border Patrol agent assigned to the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station was involved in a shooting incident subsequent to encountering a group of four individuals in the 1200 block of McNutt Road in Sunland Park, New Mexico.

During the encounter, the subject produced a firearm and shot at the agent. The agent returned fire striking the subject. An agent rendered aid to the subject until emergency medical personnel arrived. No agents were injured in the incident. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is supporting investigations into the incident, and per CBP policy, the agency will also conduct an internal investigation of the incident led by the CBP Office of Professional Responsibility.
