MORENCI — High above the Gila Valley on Lawson Stadium’s historic hill, a battle of feline mascots promised high stakes on Friday night. But as the night wore on, the unbeaten Benson Bobcats put on a dominant clinic, delivering a 42-0 shutout over the home-standing Morenci Wildcats in front of a dry, fair-weather crowd of more than 1,000 fans.
Benson quarterback Cohen Barney delivered a career-defining performance, scoring five total touchdowns—three on the ground and two through the air—to anchor an offense that scored on all five second-half possessions.
Morenci started the game on a high note when junior running back Jeremya Cruz found a seam along the sideline and ripped off a long run down toward the red zone. However, Barney showed off his hustle from his defensive position, making a touchdown-saving tackle along the boundary to keep Morenci out of the end zone.
Faced with a 4th-and-7 moments later, Cruz was brought down short of the line to gain, turning the ball over on downs.
The remainder of the opening quarter turned into a defensive slugfest. Benson defenders Tyson Kilpatrick and Wayne Stark recorded early tackles for loss, while Morenci’s front line responded in kind, with Joel Baca tracking down runners in the backfield and Joseph Rodriguez wrapping up Barney on a 3rd-and-8 sack.
Despite moving the chains once off a defensive pass interference penalty, Morenci struggled to establish momentum, setting the tone for a night in which they were forced to punt eight times. The first quarter ended locked in a scoreless tie.
Morenci sparked briefly on the ground early in the second quarter. Joshwa Sandoval moved the chains, and quarterback Deegan Miller rolled out to pitch to Brayden Mason for a solid pickup to midfield. However, the Wildcats’ drive stalled shortly after.
Benson’s offense soon found its groove. Running back Kolttin Deskins picked up 16 yards to cross into Wildcat territory, and Barney found Byron Judd on a roll-out pass to set up 1st-and-goal at the 3-yard line.
Barney finished the drive himself on the next play, plunging in from three yards out for a 3-yard rushing touchdown. Wayne Stark split the uprights on the point-after attempt, giving Benson a 7-0 lead.
Morenci tried to mount a late response before the break. Facing 3rd-and-long with under two minutes left, Miller dropped back under heavy pressure and lofted a pass to Mason among a sea of Benson defenders, but the play fell just short of the line to gain. Benson carried its slim 7-0 advantage into the halftime locker room.
Second-Half Explosion
Whatever adjustments Benson made at halftime paid immediate dividends. On the very first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Barney faked a handoff, executed a sharp juke to make the unblocked defender miss, and exploded into the secondary. As Cruz closed in for a chase-down attempt, receiver Gaige Trejo sealed off the lane with a key block, allowing Barney to complete a 60-yard touchdown run just 14 seconds into the half. Stark’s PAT pushed the lead to 14-0.
Morenci tried to answer through Gunner Barron on the edge, but Benson’s front line—led by Steven Deskins, John Lee, and Mason Stanley—feasted in the backfield. Miller found himself running for his life under relentless pressure on nearly every pass attempt.
Benson capitalized on the short-field position. Barney hit Trejo for a key first down before Rene Lorta ripped off a chunk run down to the red zone. Barney then connected with Stark on a 2nd-and-4 route down to the 1-yard line, setting up Kolttin Deskins for a 1-yard touchdown plunge to extend the lead to 21-0 with 6:05 remaining in the third.
The visitor momentum only accelerated from there. After a long pass to Judd was negated by a penalty, Barney quickly erased the distance, finding Stark on a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Turning Bad to Worse
The fourth quarter opened with additional misfortune for the Wildcats. Facing 4th-and-3, Morenci lined up to punt, but the long snap sailed over the punter’s head. Trejo pounced on the loose ball for Benson at Morenci’s 26-yard line.
Taking advantage of the gift, Barney converted a 4th-and-1 moments later into a 17-yard touchdown run—his third rushing score of the night—extending the margin to 35-0 and triggering the running mercy clock.
Even with an insurmountable lead, Benson’s defense refused to soften. Miller delivered his best pass of the evening, throwing a tight-window spiral downfield between double coverage to Mason in the end zone. However, defender Tatum Kilpatrick got his fingertips on the ball at the last millisecond to deflect the touchdown attempt away.
Regaining possession, Barney connected with Judd on a deep route to reach the 30-yard line. Two plays later, Barney dropped back and fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to Trejo in the end zone, capping off a 42-0 victory for the Benson Bobcats.
With the win, Benson remains undefeated, while Morenci looks to regroup and recalibrate its offense heading into next week’s matchup. The Bobcats will next host Santa Cruz on Friday, Oct. 2, while the Wildcats (1-0 region, 3-3 overall) will be on the road at Miami on the same day.

Willcox stayed unbeaten with an easy win. The Cowboys (0-0 region, 6-0 overall) will next be on the road at the Desert Christian Eagles on Friday, Oct. 2.
Ray 62 Fort Thomas 12
Fort Thomas fell on the road. The Apaches (1-1 region, 1-5 overall) will next host the Mayer Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 2.
