Apaches bow out in five sets to Matadors

Cowgirls advance to first-round berth

FORT THOMAS – The first-round match was decided during a fifth set after the teams won two sets apiece. A 15-13 score favored the visiting No. 10 Phoenix Maryvale Prep Matadors (11-5 seeding, 0.6027 rating) in Jerry W. Hancock Gymnasium on Nov. 6. Maryvale Prep also won sets one (25-22) and three (25-11) while No. 7 Fort Thomas (14-4, 2.6454) won sets two (25-22) and four (25-17).

It was the second first-round, five-sets upset, as No. 9 Joseph City defeated No. 8 Anthem Prep 3-2 (23-25, 25-15, 25-27, 25-16, 15-8) on Nov. 5.

The match was held a day later than six other first-round pairings because the facility was used as a voting site.

South Region champion and No. 2 Scottsdale Cicero Prep (14-3, 10.9163) eliminated No. 15 Saint Michael 3-1 (25-16, 25-9, 23-25, 25-7) on Nov. 5.

Three sites will have the 2A State Tourney matches, the Mesa High campus, 1630 East Southern Avenue, Tempe Marcos de Niza, 6000 South Lakeshore Drive, and the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1826 West McDowell Road in Phoenix.
