THATCHER — American Southwest Credit Union (ASCU) officially opened its new Thatcher branch on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the anchor location of the Thatcher Commercial Plaza.

The event marks the culmination of nearly four years of planning and roughly one year of construction since the groundbreaking on May 16, 2025. The 3,200-square-foot building is the first completed business in the new commercial development at the former Red Lamp Mobile Home Park site, located at the intersection of Highway 70 and 3rd Avenue (3343 W. Main St.). Town officials purchased the roughly 4.5-acre site for $1.2 million in 2018. In addition to ASCU, the other highway frontage of the property will be utilized by a Culver’s restaurant.

Town and county officials, credit union representatives, and community members gathered for the opening ceremony. Speakers highlighted the project’s significance for local economic growth and community service.

Carolina Espinoza Gaethje of the Thatcher Town Council said, “This investment represents more than just a new building. It represents growth, opportunity, and confidence in our community. Strong financial institutions help support local families, small businesses, and the future development of our town. We are grateful to the leadership and staff of American Southwest Credit Union for choosing Thatcher and for their commitment to serving our residents.”

Graham County Supervisor Paul David emphasized the broader economic benefits, noting the taxes generated from the property purchase, construction, and ongoing operations that support local schools, fire districts, and county services. He praised the personal service offered by small credit unions compared to large institutions.

“Small credit unions… provide personal service, it’s faster,” David said. “Over sixty percent nationwide… of loans in communities are given by small credit unions. Small banking organizations, and that’s critical to our growth.”

Gila Cheer’s Taylor Banks welcomed the credit union to its new site on the west side of Thatcher, acknowledging the hard work involved: “You guys have done such a great job. You can tell there’s a lot of blood, sweat, and tears put into this… Change is crazy, change is inevitable, but what comes with change is new chapters, new opportunities, and new clientele. Congratulations to you guys. What a milestone,” Banks said.

ASCU President and CEO Jay Williamson presented local rancher Jay Whetten, owner of the 76 Ranch, with three framed photographs from a series taken on the ranch. The images, intended for display in the new branch, were given as a token of appreciation for allowing the credit union to photograph the property to highlight rural Arizona.

The Thatcher branch adds to ASCU’s growing footprint, which includes locations in Sierra Vista, Kearney, Douglas, Benson, and Sahuarita. The credit union, originally founded to serve military personnel at Fort Huachuca, expanded into the Gila Valley at the request of local businesses seeking better financial options, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new facility serves as the anchor for Thatcher Commercial Plaza. A Culver’s restaurant is being constructed next door, with its own 4,400-square-foot building featuring a covered patio. Culver’s held its ceremonial groundbreaking in February 2026. The back half of the property is slated for development by Palmer Dentistry.

Construction of the credit union was handled by local contractor Hughes Custom Performance, with design by LaMacchia Group of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
