SAFFORD – The Friends of the Library and the Gila Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will co-host a program on the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, the day the Constitution was signed 239 years ago in 1787.
This special event of historical interest will take place during DAR’s Constitution Week on “Constitution Day,” Thursday, September 17, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Safford Library Annex on 814 S. Central Ave. All are invited; admission is free.
To set the stage, a well-known local trio of singers (Jeff Skiba, Ethan McBride, and Michael Shoaf) will raise the spirit of patriotism by performing patriotic songs that will resonate deeply with attendees.
Constitution Week, initiated by DAR in 1955, is a way to remember the importance of the U.S. Constitution. During this special program on Constitution Day, the Honorable Michael D. Peterson, Graham County Superior Court Judge, will give a presentation entitled “Why the Constitution Matters Now More Than Ever”.
After Judge Peterson’s presentation, the program will recognize the local high school students who won the DAR chapter’s Patriotic Essay Contest on the U.S. Constitution. The DAR Scholarship Committee will announce the winners and share portions of their essays about what would motivate someone to sign the Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution.
Following the program, refreshments will be provided by a chapter of great cooks and The Rustic Barn Bakery.
