Staff Reports

Graham County – Over three days, the Safford Fire Department and authorities responded to three separate fire incidents, showcasing rapid response and effective containment with no reported injuries.

On Aug. 23, at approximately 9:35 a.m., emergency services were dispatched to the CKC Construction & Materials at 1234 E. Airport Rd., following reports of a fire at an asphalt plant.

Black smoke and flames were observed beneath large oil storage tanks. A representative for CKC reported that the fire ignited when a pallet caught fire after a weed burner was used to unclog a pipe during rubberized asphalt production.

The blaze spread rapidly, but the Safford Fire Department extinguished it efficiently. No injuries were reported, and the cause was attributed to an operational mishap during maintenance.

The previous day, Aug 22, at 12:36 p.m., a fire broke out on E. Bowler Lane, where a property owner reported his old Safford Carpet van ablaze. The man, who reportedly used the van to store construction materials and tools, estimated losses between $8,000 and $10,000.

The Safford Fire Department arrived promptly but could not save the van, which was a total loss. Recent rain left no visible tracks, and no suspicious activity was suspected.

On Aug. 24, at 8:01 a.m., a hay baler fire was reported on N. Judd Ln. The owner had already extinguished the fire using a hose after moving the baler near his residence. The hay baler sustained minimal damage, and no further action was required.

The fire department’s quick response across all incidents ensured no injuries and limited damage where possible. Authorities continue to monitor and investigate to prevent future incidents.
