Staff Reports

GREENLEE COUNTY – Greenlee County Sheriff’s Deputy Antonio Montez has been arrested and booked into the Graham County Adult Detention Facility on a charge of aggravated assault on a juvenile.

On Friday, July 4, the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint regarding the assault. Due to a conflict of interest, the Clifton Police Department handled the investigation.

Upon conclusion, officers with the Clifton Police Department arrested Deputy Antonio Montez for aggravated assault on a juvenile in a domestic violence situation. He was initially booked into the Greenlee County Jail before being transferred to Graham County for holding.

Montez had an initial appearance before Gila Valley Consolidated Municipal Court Justice of the Peace Wyatt Palmer and was given a $5,000 bond.

Greenlee County Sheriff Eric Ellison has promoted transparency in his administration and, upon learning of the incident, immediately had an outside agency (Clifton Police Department) handle the investigation. He then transferred the deputy to be held in Graham County to avoid any possible incidents at the Greenlee County Jail.
