GRAHAM COUNTY — This Saturday, May 10, is Global Big Day, during which bird lovers worldwide try to see or hear as many species as possible between midnight and 11:59 p.m.
Local birders can participate without leaving their backyards. Just keep track of the species you see, roughly how many of each, and the times of day you watch them. Then email your list, along with your address as the location is needed, to Diane Drobka at sunny1az@yahoo.com. She is the Graham County coordinator for Global Big Day and the Christmas Bird Count each year. If you already use eBird to tally your bird sightings, you can post the results without emailing them.
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to see how many more species you can see, consider visiting one of our local hotspots:
- Roper Lake
- Dankworth Pond
- Cluff Ranch Wildlife Area
- Mt. Graham Golf Course
- Daley Estates Ponds
- Reay Lane Wetlands (Wastewater Treatment in Thatcher)
The Graham County Bird Checklist lists 392 species of birds. If you’re in Greenlee or Cochise counties, you can use eBird or report your sighting to Diane, and she will forward it to each county coordinator.
