Morenci welcomes Round Valley on Wednesday

SAINT JOHNS – The Joseph Garcia-coached Morenci Wildcats visit the Saint Johns Redskins on Monday, March 17 for a 2 p.m. start. Morenci hosts Eagar Round Valley on Wednesday, March 19, and heads to the 2-day Chandler Prep tourney beginning on Friday, March 21.

Other seeding pairings for South Region members this week (March 17-21) include Benson hosting Phoenix Horizon Honors on March 17; Tombstone visiting Tucson Empire and Bisbee hosting Eldrida Valley Union on Tuesday, March 18; Tucson Saint Augustine Catholic at Eloy Santa Cruz on March 19; and Tucson San Miguel visiting Valley Union on Saturday, March 22.

Tombstone and Benson will be taking part in the 2-day Payson tourney and Bisbee in the 2-day Douglas tourney on March 21-22.

2A South Region Standings

Region standings through March 15 have Tombstone (6-4 overall, 5-0 seeding, 0-0 region) first, Tucson Saint Augustine Catholic (4-2*, 3-1, 0-0) second, Morenci (5-2, 2-1, 0-0) tied for third, Willcox (5-5, 2-1, 0-0) tied for third, Bisbee (6-2, 2-2, 0-0) fifth, Tucson Desert Christian (1-7, 1-1, 0-0) sixth, Benson (4-5, 1-3, 0-0) seventh, Tucson Santa Rita (1-2, 1-2, 0-0) eighth, and Tucson San Miguel Catholic (0-3, 0-3, 0-0) ninth.

There have not been any region games played to date.

2A East Region Standings

A walk and double with two outs in the third inning was followed by a strikeout; two were left on in the fourth by a strikeout, having reached first on a walk and fielding error; and one was left on in the fifth, singling on with one out and left on by a fly out and strikeout.

Region standings through March 15 have Miami (3-2 overall, 3-2 seeding, 0-0 region) first, Gilbert Leading Edge (1-4, 1-4, 0-0) second, San Carlos (3-5, 1-3, 0-0) third, Chandler Prep (3-2, 0-1, 0-0) fourth, Pima (0-2, 0-2, 0-0) fifth, and Gilbert Classical (0-2, 0-2, 0-0) sixth.

Saint Johns Redskins (6-1 overall)

The Kasey Nelson-coached 2A North Region Saint Johns Redskins (6-1, 1-0, 0-0) are averaging a 13-5 (92-32) score per game or an 8-run margin through seven games.

Saint Johns defeated Payson (24-9 in 4 inn, March 4) during its lone seeding game played.

The Redskins went 5-1 during the 3-day Joseph City tourney, topping Fort Defiance Window Rock (13-0 in 4 inn, March 6), Saint Michael (7-0 in 4 inn, March 6), Whiteriver Alchesay (15-2 in 4 inn, March 7), KeamsCanyon Hopi (18-1 in 4 inn, March 7), and Kingman (12-9, March 8) before succumbing to Joseph City (3-11, March 8).

Round Valley Elks (6-2 overall)

The Colette Meyers-coached 2A North Region Elks (6-2 overall, 1-0 seeding, 0-0 region) are averaging an 8-6 (66-49) score per game or a 2-run margin through eight games.

Round Valley defeated Eloy Santa Cruz (7-4, March 5) during its lone seeding game.

The Elks went 2-1 during the Wickenburg tourneyand 3-1 during the 3-day Tolleson tourney. The wins were over Phoenix North (11-1 in 4 inn, March 8), Benson (10-9 in 4 inn, March 8), Camp Verde (10-2 in 5 inn, March 12), Kearny Ray (13-1 in 4 inn, March 12), and Phoenix Christian (12-4 in 5 inn, March 14) along with losses to Phoenix Thunderbird (2-13 in 4 inn, March 8) and Bullhead City Mohave Accelerated (1-15, March 14).

Morenci Wildcats (52 overall)

The Joseph Garcia-coached 2A South Region Wildcats (5-2 overall, 2-1 seeding, 0-0 region) are averaging an11-4 (76-30) score per game or a 7-run margin through seven games.

Morenci run-ruled Miami (11-0 in 5 inn, March 5) and Pima (15-0 in 5 inn, March 11) before being blanked by Willcox (0-10 in 5 inn, March 14) in seeding games.

The Wildcats went 3-1 during the 3-day Queen Creek Benjamin Franklin tourney, topping Gilbert Christian (23-0 in 3 inn, Feb. 27), San Tan Valley Poston Butte (9-7 in 6 inn, Feb. 28), and Phoenix Northwest Christian (14-2 in 5 inn, March 1). The loss was to Phoenix Horizon Honors (4-11 in 5 inn, Feb. 28).

Morenci has a 15-member team with two seniors, three juniors, six sophomores, and four freshmen. The roster includes seniors Ariana Burnette (20) and Cameryn Woodall (3); juniors Jaliyah Hernandez (14), JaimieTurner (2), and Shaylee Wichmann (13); sophomores Tiara Jones (15), Kieralyn Madrigal (6), Malina Martinez(7), Mayeli Salazar (5), Kailee Sandoval (8), and Janessa Webb (9); and freshmen Ava Basteen (1), KhloeeKouts (11), Emily Rivera (17), and Leiah Strong (16).

The Wildcats are competing in the 9-member 2A South Region with Benson, Bisbee, Tombstone, Willcox, and Tucson schools Desert Christian, Saint Augustine Catholic, San Miguel Catholic, and Santa Rita.

Willcox – 10Morenci – 0 (5 inn)

The visiting Wildcats were limited to three up and three down once, stranded six runners total during the next four innings with two outs and threatened to score, but a strikeout diffused each situation.

For the game, Morenci batted .167 (3-18) versus .417 (10-24) by Willcox.

Woodall and Martinez both batted ,500 (1-2) and Hernandez .333 (1-3).

For Willcox, seniors Layla Donahue (2-2, 2 doubles) and Abi Tingle (1-1) along with junior Nataly Thompson (3-3, RBI) each batted 1.000, freshman Karlie St. Clair ,500 (1-2, home run, 4 RBIs), and seniors Madison Bennett (RBI), Alyssa Gonzalez (RBI), and Emma McWilliams each .333 (1-3).

In the circle, Gonzalez fanned seven, allowed three hits, and walked three while facing 21 batters during fiveinnings requiring 84 pitches.

Morenci – 15, Pima – 0 (5 inn)

It was three up and three down four times for the Roughriders during a run-ruled outing in Morenci. One base runner reached first on a fielding error but advanced no further.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the first with seven batters, three in the second with eight batters, seven in the third with 11 batters, and two in the fourth with seven batters.

Woodall batted 1.000 (3-3, double, sac., 3 RBIs), Jones (double, sac, 2 RBIs), Basteen (sac, 3 RBIs), Kouts(double, RBI) .667 (2-3) apiece, and Hernandez (2-4, double, RBI), Madrigal (2-4, 2 RBIs), Wichman (2-4, double, 2 RBIs), Martinez, and Turner (RBI) each .500.
