Morenci welcomes Willcox on Thursday

MORENCI – The Brenda Street-coached Morenci tennis girls host Willcox on Thursday, March 13.

Also this week (March 11-15), Benson visits Duncan, Willcox hosts Saint David, Globe hosts Miami on March 11, Duncan visits Patagonia, Thatcher visits Tucson Pusch Ridge Christian, and Benson hosts Saint David on Thursday, March 13.

Duncan defeated Pima 8-1 on March 10.

Around the section last week (March 3-8), Thatcher shutout Safford 9-0, and Duncan blanked Patagonia 9-0 on March 3; Willcox shutout Duncan 9-0, Apache Junction defeated Miami 7-2, and Avondale Saint John Paul II Catholic blanked Morenci 9-0 on March 4; Thatcher shutout Tucson Sabino 9-0 on March 5; and Benson slipped past Tucson Andrada Polytechnic, 5-4. Eloy Santa Cruz shutout Globe 9-0, Morenci defeated Tombstone 6-3, and Thatcher downed Chandler Prep 7-2 on March 6.

Safford’s round-robin tourney on March 7 was called off because the court resurfacing was incomplete. It is in the process of being rescheduled. Duncan placed first with 20 points in the H.T. Clothier Invitational, Benson second (7), Tombstone third (6), Globe fourth (3), and Saint David did not score on March 8.

There is a week-long pause in competition from March 17-22.

Division III – Section I standings

The section standings as of March 8 were Thatcher (4-1 seeding, 1-0 section) first, Duncan (3-0, 0-0) second, Safford (1-1, 0-0) third, Morenci (1-2, 0-0) fourth, Benson (0-1, 0-0) fifth, Pima (0-1, 0-0) sixth, Willcox (0-1, 0-0) seven, Globe (0-2, 0-1) eighth, and Miami (0-2, 0-0).

The visiting Lions left no doubt who is in a higher state of preparation at this point in the season. They left Greenlee County with nine pairing wins and a team win.

Freshman Ania Piatek, freshman Dominika Grabiec, sophomore Chantelle Gleaves, sophomore Izabella Frankowski, sophomore Samaira Schieffer, and junior Eva Wohler defeated junior Ariza Espinoza (6-0 twice), junior Izzalana Gobert (6-0 twice), sophomore Adriana Dorame Galindo (6-0, 6-1), sophomore Alana Demieville (6-0 twice), sophomore Daisy Dia (6-1, 6-0), and sophomore Isabella Fagone (6-0, 6-1), respectively.

The Piatek – Grabiec, Gleaves – Frankowski, and Schieffer – Wohler duos topped Espinoza – Gobert (8-2), Galindo – Demieville (8-0), and Dia -Fagone (8-2), respectively.
