SAFFORD – A severe thunderstorm blew through Safford late Sunday afternoon, causing numerous incidents of property damage and knocking out the power in some places until 10:30 p.m.
The storm brought a quick deluge of rain and even some hail, but it was the wind that did the most damage.
The Gila Herald has received reports of toppled trees – including one that fell on a car – a ripped-off roof from an apartment, a tipped-over trailer, a business off U.S. Highway 70 was damaged, and numerous other instances of property damage from the storm.
Several streets were also flooded from the rain.
Safford resident Patti Cervantez described being in the path of the storm.
“It was like a small tornado hit,” Cervantez said. “Homes near the church on Catalina took big hits. Trees were on houses, roofs damaged. (The) electricity finally came back around 10:30 p.m..”
