FORT THOMAS – The Matthew Dona-coached top-ranked Fort Thomas Apaches will be tested by the No. 2 Joseph City Wildcats this week. The Jerry W. Hancock Gymnasium-held pairing is on Friday, Jan. 30, with a 6 p.m. tip-off. The Apaches also host 1A North Region Saint Michael on Saturday, Jan. 31, for a 4 p.m. start.

Pima dropped in a pair of high percentage shots plus a long distance shot to lead 7-0 during the first minute of play.

The visiting Vandals found themselves trying to catch up before lighting up their side of the scoreboard with 1:12 elapsed. Junior John McGaughey netted two points.
Nearly three minutes, 2:56 to be exact, elapsed before Miami scored again on sophomore Dreyton Dickison’s 1-2 free throws. By then, the Vandals trailed by nine, 2-11. Another free throw, 1-3 by Dickeson, put Miami in double figures to trail 10-25 with 39 seconds left in the opening quarter. The Vandals outscored the Roughriders 17-11 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to offset the 58-point three-quarters deficit.
The Roughriders led 27-10 at the start of the second quarter, 58-16 at halftime, and 86-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Pima connected on 42 field goals (seven 3-pointers) plus 6-9 free throws compared to 17 field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 9-12 free throws by Miami.
Senior Charles Richardson scored 19 points on eight field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 2-3 free throws, senior Keegan Corona scored 18 on seven field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 2-2 free throws, junior Joel Mattice 18 on nine field goals, and junior Nash Bodily 10 on four field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 1-2 free throws. Junior Tanner Smith added nine points, senior Keaton Bryce eight, junior Brendan Skiba seven, junior Gilbert Bryce four, senior Isaac Thompson and junior Stratton McRae two each.
For Miami, Isaiah Tarango scored 20 points on eight field goals plus 4-4 free throws, and junior Kris Tarango scored 14 points on five field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 3-3 free throws. McGaughey added four points, junior Julio Rodriguez three, sophomore Dreyton Dickison and Dominic Romero two each.
No. 23 Willcox – 60, No. 27 Morenci – 55 (Jan. 22)
The South Region pairing between 3-0 Morenci and 3-1 Willcox was decided in the closing minute. Willcox junior J.D. Whetten dialed long distance as 1:25 remained to break the game’s final 53-53 tie, and senior Ty Shull added the dagger with 18 seconds to go. It gave the Cowboys a 5-point advantage, a 25-14 fourth-quarter lead, and a total that would become the final score.

The game had been knotted thrice before during the first three quarters, 2-2 and 4-4 during the first quarter, and 12-12 in the second quarter. Morenci senior Adrian McCallum made it a fourth tie, sinking 2-2 free throws with 1:53 left to play for the 53-53 deadlock.
Willcox led 8-6 following the first quarter, while Morenci led 26-19 at halftime and 41-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
On the evening, Morenci made 16 field goals (five 3-pointers) plus 18-25 free throws versus 25 field goals (seven 3-pointers) plus 3-7 free throws by Willcox.

Junior Aymen Abdulqader tallied 21 points on seven field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 2-2 free throws, junior Adrian McCabe 15 on three field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 7-8 free throws, and senior Adrian McCallum 11 on three field goals plus 5-8 free throws. Freshman Marcus Najar added eight points and sophomore Deegan Miller six.
For Willcox, Shull netted 22 points on nine field goals (four 3-pointers) plus 0-1 free throws and Whetten 21 on eight field goals (three 3-pointers) plus 2-4 free throws. Junior Jahir Reyes added nine points, sophomore Asher Ward four, junior Bryan Cuevas and sophomore Tucker Shamback two each.
2A No. 2 Pima Roughriders (12-2 seeding, 17.3469 rating)
