MORENCI — The Steven Ward-coached Willcox Cowboys (3-8-1 overall) entered Francis Waldorf Stadium for a 2A South Region contest against the Christopher Aguallo-coached Morenci Wildcats (7-8) on Thursday and emerged victorious 11-2.
Other seeding pairings for South Region members the rest of this week (March 26-29) include Bisbee (12-3) at Tombstone (11-3-1), Benson (6-9-1) at San Miguel (0-7), and Santa Rita (1-3) at Desert Christian (1-8) on March 27.
Non-region pairings include Palo Verde Magnet at Saint Augustine on March 28 and Phoenix Horizon Honors at Desert Christian and Phoenix Christian at San Miguel on Saturday, March 29.
East Region pairings for the rest of the week are Chandler Prep at Pima and Miami at Gilbert Classical on March 28.
Non-region games include Tempe Prep at San Tan Charter on March 27 and Pima at Round Valley Sells Baboquivari at San Carlos on March 29.
2A South Region Standings
South Region standings through March 27 switched with Bisbee leaping over Tombstone with a 4-3 victory on March 27. To date the list reads Bisbee (13-3, 8-0, 2-0) first, Tombstone (11-4-1 overall, 7-1 seeding, 1-1 region) second, Benson (7-9-1, 5-2, 1-0) third, Willcox 10-7, 3-3, 1-0) fourth, Tucson Saint Augustine Catholic (2-9, 2-6, 1-0) fifth, Tucson Desert Christian (2-8, 2-7, 1-1) sixth, Morenci (8-7, 2-4, 0-2) seventh, Tucson San Miguel Catholic (0-8, 0-6, 0-1) eighth, and Tucson Santa Rita (1-4, 0-4, 0-2) ninth.
2A East Region Standings
East Region standings through March 26 have Gilbert San Tan Charter (8-1 overall, 5-1 seeding, 1-0 region) first, Chandler Prep (5-3, 2-3, 1-0) second, Chandler Lincoln Prep (3-5-1, 2-4, 1-0) third, Pima (3-4-1, 1-2, 0-0) fourth, Gilbert Classical (0-4, 2-3, 0-0) fifth, San Carlos (1-5, 0-5, 0-1) sixth, and Miami (1-10, 0-7, 0-2) seventh.
Results of region games to date are Chandler Prep over Miami (1-14 in 5 inn, March 19), Lincoln Prep over Miami (10-0 in 6 inn, March 21) on March 21; San Tan Charter over San Carlos (17-0 in 4 inn, March 24),
Willcox Cowboys (4-8-1 overall)
The Steven Ward-coached 2A South Region Cowboys (4-8-1 overall, 3-3 seeding, 1-0 region) have averaged a 6-7 (68-75) score per game or a 1-point deficit through 11 games.
Willcox has seeding game wins over Patagonia (7-1, March 5) and Desert Christian (7-6, March 7) along with losses to Tombstone (0-12 in 5 inn, March 4), Bisbee (1-8, March 11), and Eagar Round Valley (9-10 in 8 inn, March 21), and now Morenci (March 27).
The Cowboys went 0-2-1 during the 3-day Queen Creek Benjamin Franklin tourney and 1-3 during the 2-day Bisbee tourney. Willcox defeated San Miguel (11-2 in 4 inn, March 4), succumbed to Coolidge (5-11 in 4 inn, Feb. 28), Chandler Prep (1-14 in 4 inn, March 1), Tombstone (0-8 in 5 inn, March 14), Saint David (1-10 in 5 inn, March 15), and Kearny Ray (2-10 in 5 inn, March 15), and tied with Winslow (5-5 in 4 inn, Feb. 27).
A 17-member team is composed of seven seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen. The roster roster includes seniors Anderas C (8), Jesus Arriquivres (11), Juan Cordova (44), Isaiah Carey (17), Jon Jon Miranda (36), Jojo Rodriguez (15), and Severo Torres (4); juniors Randy Hill (22), Joe Sanchez (3), Ty Shull (2), and Christian Teeters (20); sophomores Anthony Morales (5), Jahyir Reyes (6), and Mark Wilson (10); and freshmen Robert Hill Jr. (12), Tucker Stamback (24), and Asher Ward (9).
The Cowboys are competing in the 9-member 2A South Region with Benson, Bisbee, Morenci, Tombstone, and Tucson schools Desert Christian, Saint Augustine Catholic, San Miguel Catholic, and Santa Rita.
Morenci Wildcats (7-9 overall)
The Christopher Aguallo-coached 2A South Region Wildcats (7-9 overall, 2-4 seeding, 0-2 region) are averaging a 4-7 (66-98) score per game or a 3-run deficit through 15 games.
Morenci has seeding game wins over Pima (5-2, March 11) and Eagar Round Valley (19-18, March 19) along with losses to Saint Johns (5-6, March 17), Eloy Santa Cruz (2-12 in 6 inn, March 20), and Tombstone (1-14 in 5 inn, March 24).
The Wildcats went 2-3 during the 3-day Florence tourney and 3-2 during their own 3-day tourney.
Morenci defeated San Tan Valley San Tan Foothills (4-3 in 5 inn, Feb. 27), Holbrook (3-2 in 5 inn, March 1), Holbrook (2-1 in 5 inn, March 6), Heber Mogollon (6-5 in 5 inn, March 6), and Saint Johns (9-4 in 4 inn, March 7), and fell to Safford (0-9 in 4 inn, Feb. 27), Superior (1-7 in 4 inn, Feb. 28), San Manuel (1-2 in 5 inn, March 1), Mogollon (6-7 in 5 inn, March 7), and Holbrook (2-6 in 6 inn, March 8).
