Morenci girls travel to Chandler Prep, Pima

MORENCI – The Joseph Garcia-coached Morenci Wildcats (10-11 overall) host Tucson San Miguel (0-10) on Wednesday, April 16. The Wildcats first travel to Chandler Prep (13-3) on Monday, April 14, and to Pima (5-7) on Thursday, April 17.

This week, other pairings for South Region members (April 14-19) include Tombstone at Santa Rita on April 14, Willcox at Desert Christian and Benson at Saint Augustine on April 16, and Tombstone at Bisbee on April 18.

Non-region pairings include Valley Union at Willcox, Bisbee at San Miguel, Pima at Benson, and Saint Augustine at Desert Christian on April 14; Santa Cruz at Benson on April 15; and Desert Christian at Willcox on April 18.

Upcoming 2A East Region pairings include Leading Edge at San Carlos on April 14 and Chandler Prep at Leading Edge and San Carlos at Pima on April 16.

Non-region pairings include Morenci at Chandler Prep, Whiteriver Alchesay at Miami, Pima at Benson on April 14, Superior at Gilbert Classical on April 16, Phoenix Maryvale Prep at Chandler Prep on April 17, and Duncan at San Carlos on April 18.

The state tourney will have 16 teams competing for the title, with numbers 9-24 paired for the play-in round on April 30. The eight play-in winners face the top eight for the 16-team, 4-round tourney, beginning on May 3 and concluding on May 12.

Twice 3-1 records were posted by the Titans in as many 2-day tourneys, hosted by Saint Augustine and themselves. The wins were over Tucson Catalina (21-2 in 4 inn, March 14), Globe (16-6 in 5 inn, March 14), Leading Edge (19-0 in 4 inn, March 15), San Carlos (17-5 in 4 inn, March 20), Fort Thomas (15-0 in 4 inn, March 21), and Whiteriver Alchesay (10-7 in 5 inn, March 21) while the losses were to Winkelman Hayden (5-6, March 15) and Parker (12-13 in 6 inn, March 20).

The Titans have a 19-member team with eight seniors, four juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen. The Wildcats went 3-1 during the 3-day Queen Creek Benjamin Franklin tournament and 1-3 during the 2-day Chandler Prep tourney. Morenci topped Gilbert Christian (23-0 in 3 inn, Feb. 27), San Tan Valley Poston Butte (9-7 in 6 inn, Feb. 28), Phoenix Northwest Christian (14-2 in 5 inn, March 1), and Prescott (5-2 in 6 inn, March 20). The losses were to Phoenix Horizon Honors (4-11 in 5 inn, Feb. 28), Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep (0-18 in 5 inn, March 20), Phoenix Thunderbird (2-12 in 5 inn, March 21), and Thatcher (0-1, March 21).
