PHOENIX – The 2025 NBA season for the Suns is set to begin, like the 2024 season did, with a brand-new head coach. After a disappointing 2023 season, the Suns thought they found their answer by hiring former Bucks and NBA-winning coach Mike Budenholzer. However, after high hopes for a return to the playoffs in 2024 led by the trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, the Suns ultimately finished with a 36-46 record.
After a solid start in the first half of the season, come the All-Star break, the Suns went into a nose dive. After three years removed from the 2021 NBA Finals loss, according to calgary2026.ca, the Phoenix Suns are burning the midnight oil about what the upcoming 2025 season holds in store for the Phoenix Suns.
To give the fans hope, the Suns brass hired Jordan Ott, a former Cavalier’s assistant, to return the Suns to glory. Before the NBA Draft, the Suns unloaded Kevin Durant in a blockbuster trade to the Houston Rockets. Even though Durant is still an elite scorer, he is 36 years old and comes with legitimate questions about how much longer he can score and perform at an elite level.
Perhaps one of the main reasons for trading Durant was to help unload his contract to re-sign star point guard Devin Booker to a max extension. Despite an unforgettable 2024 season, Booker was one of the few bright spots, averaging 25.6 points per game and 7.1 assists. As part of the Durant trade, the Suns received Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks.
With the NBA Draft coming and going, the Suns built immediate depth with promising prospects like Khaman Maluach and Koby Brea. It appears that the 2025 season will be a crucial building block season. The Suns, by most experts, are not expected to make the playoffs. However, the upcoming seasons are perfect for developing young talent.
With free agency nearly here, the Suns are rumored to be moving Bradley Beal, who is also nearing the end of his contract, to help free up the salary cap. It’s also possible that Bradley Beal becomes part of a sign-and-trade. One rumored trade is with their Pacific Division rival, the Golden State Warriors.
With the Warriors’ dynasty all but over, many experts believe they are looking to unload Jonathan Kuminga. With Kuminga a restricted free agent, the young and athletic forward might fit in nicely with the run-and-gun style that Devin Booker brings running the point.
Whether or not the Suns trade for Grayson Allen, it’s clear that with their slow and methodical approach, as well as the aggressive trades they are making, the Suns are committed to the rebuilding process. To help with the rebuilding process, the Suns have been linked to possibly signing free-agent Guard Russel Westbrook. Westbrook could be a great sixth man and a mentor to the young Suns in 2025 to help them return to former glory.
