THATCHER – The 3A South Region Thatcher Eagles (1-1 seeding) hosts 3A Metro Region Payson (1-0), the 2A East Region Pima Roughriders host the 2A South Region Benson Bobcats (2-0), and the 1A East Region Fort Thomas Apaches (1-0) hosts the 1A North Region Dishchii’bikoh Wildcats (1-1) on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The Apaches host the 2A East Region San Carlos Braves (2-0) on Wednesday, Dec. 3; Morenci visits 3A South Region Empire on Thursday, Dec. 4; the Eagles host the 2A South Region Willcox Cowgirls (2-0) and the Apaches visit the 1A South Region Sells Baboquivari Warriors (2-1) on Friday, Dec. 5; and the Roughriders host the 2A Central Region Scottsdale Christian Eagles () on Saturday, Dec. 6.

The win was over Globe (44-41, Dec. 1), and the losses were to 4A Gila Region Douglas (21-40, Nov. 19) and 3A Metro Region Payson (23-53, Nov. 21).

The Eldon Merrell-coached Wildkats (1-0 overall, 0-0 seeding, 0-0 1A East Region) have played one seeding game, defeating San Manuel (57-10, Nov. 25).

Duncan went 2-2 during the 3-day Boyd Baker tourney. The Wildkats defeated The Gregory School (21-13, Nov. 20) and Saint David (35-33, Nov. 22), but succumbed to Desert Christian (19-20, Nov. 20) and Desert View (27-34, Nov. 21).

1A East Region Standings

Region standings as of Dec. 1 were Scottsdale Cicero Prep (1-0 seeding, 0-0 region), Duncan (1-0, 0-0), Kearny Ray (1-1, 0-0), Phoenix Valley Lutheran (1-1, 0-0), Fort Thomas (1-0, 0-0), Superior (1-1, 0-0), San Manuel (0-2, 0-0), and Winkelman Hayden (0-0, 0-0).

Fort Thomas – 69, Morenci – 58 (Nov. 25)

Morenci had a 27-26 advantage with 1:02 elapsed in the third quarter on successive field goals by Tiara Jones and Carbajal, but it would be the Wildcats’ sole lead of the game. A Makayla Chapman field goal, plus Lynn Wesley’s 2-2 free throws, returned the lead to the visitors, who would not relinquish during the remainder of the game. A 29-19 Fort Thomas effort during the rest of the frame allowed the Apaches to leave Wildcat Memorial Gymnasium with a 69-58 win on Nov. 25.

Fort Thomas led 14-7 following the first quarter, 26-23 at halftime, and 40-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

Morenci connected on 20 field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 8-15 free throws, while Fort Thomas made 24 field goals (four 3-pointers) plus 10-23 free throws.

Jones ended with a game-high 21 points on seven field goals plus 7-11 free throws. Carbajal added eight points, Mayeli Salazar seven, Funari and Guzzo six apiece, and Abdulquder two.

Fort Thomas got scoring contributions from five different players. Jamie Johnson had 12 points on five field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 1-3 free throws, and Wesley had 11 on four field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 2-2 free throws. Kyra Moses added nine points, Alycia Sanchez six, Tawnee Jones five, Kynnedee Bryce, Chapman, Cory Cody, and Raeleigh Hawkins four apiece, and Lea Begay three.

Thatcher – 40, Morenci – 22 (Nov. 24)

The visiting Eagles left Wildcat Memorial Gymnasium with a 40-22 win on Nov. 24.

Thatcher never trailed, leading 14-4 after the opening quarter, 23-10 at halftime, and 28-15 heading into the fourth quarter. Thatcher senior Makenzi Lunt contributed 12 points during the first eight minutes of play, senior Ragan Buhr added the other field goal, and Morenci sophomore Jaylianna Guzzo had four points.

Morenci came within eight, 21-29 with 5:52 remaining, but no closer. The Eagles got Morenci inside player Tiara Jones to pick up a fifth foul, and Makenzi Lunt drilled a pair of free throws for a 31-21 advantage with 5:38 remaining.

Mayeli Salazar countered with 1-3 free throws to trail by nine, 22-31 with 4:00 remaining; Arisela Salazar picked up her fifth foul 19 seconds later, and a 9-0 Thatcher run by five different Eagles completed the scoring. 

Morenci connected on 10 field goals plus 2-5 free throws compared to 13 field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 12-23 free throws by Thatcher.

Mayeli Salazar had eight points for Morenci, Guzzo, Rozlyn Funari, and Jones four apiece, and Adriana Carbajal two.

For Thatcher, Makenzi Lunt paced all scorers with 18 points on six field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 4-5 free throws. Taylor Henrie added seven points, sophomore Jocelyn Lunt five, Brinlee Skousen three; Buhr, Indiana Jones, and Emry Nelson two apiece, and Claire Palmer one.
