M0RENCI — A student at Fairbanks Middle School in Morenci was involved in an incident that led to a law enforcement investigation after prohibited items, including a pocket knife and a BB gun, were discovered on campus, school officials announced Wednesday night..

The Morenci Unified School District sent a letter to parents and guardians on Wednesday, Sept. 24, detailing the event and emphasizing the district’s zero-tolerance policy for weapons on school grounds. Superintendent Jennifer L. Morales signed the communication, which described the situation as a “serious safety concern and a violation of district policy.”

According to the letter, the incident occurred on Wednesday at Fairbanks Middle School, part of the Morenci district, which is known for its motto, “We Mine the Future.” District officials collaborated with the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office and the Clifton Police Department to handle the matter. “Appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken in accordance with school and district policies,” the letter stated.

No injuries were reported, and the student did not intend to harm anyone, the district clarified. However, officials stressed the dangers of bringing any weapon or look-alike item to school, noting that even replicas can cause fear, harm, or dangerous misunderstandings.

“Weapons, including BB guns and replicas, are strictly prohibited on school grounds,” Morales wrote. “Even items that may seem like toys can cause fear, harm, or dangerous misunderstandings.”

The safety of students and staff remains the district’s highest priority, the letter added, thanking parents for their partnership in reinforcing safe choices at home. Families were encouraged to discuss the importance of school safety with their children.

The Morenci Unified School District serves a small community in eastern Arizona’s Greenlee County, centered around the mining town of Morenci. Such incidents are rare but underscore ongoing efforts nationwide to maintain secure learning environments amid rising concerns over school safety.

District Governing Board members Kelly Baker, Ron Campbell, and Steve Leybaya were listed on the letter, alongside Business Manager Erika Aguallo. Morales, in her role as superintendent, reiterated the commitment to a safe learning environment for everyone.
