SAFFORD – You may have noticed our City of Safford Streets Department out and about during the winter months, applying a tar-like material to cracks on city roads. This process is called crack sealing, and it’s an important step we take every year to keep our streets in great shape!

Crack sealing uses special materials to fill both small and large cracks. This helps extend the life of our roads and prepares them for the next step in the maintenance process: street sealing (also known as fog sealing).

Crack sealing is scheduled for this area on Wednesday, April 8.

Fog sealing is scheduled to take place April 6 through May 6, 2026, and involves applying an asphalt emulsion that seals, rejuvenates, and strengthens the pavement—helping prevent future damage.

If your street is scheduled for sealing, our team will deliver a flyer to your door with the specific date you’ll be affected. Don’t worry—once the sealing is complete, the road will usually be ready to drive on within just a few hours. City crews will place and remove traffic cones and barricades as needed. We kindly ask that you do not move barricades and instead use alternate parking and travel routes while work is underway.

Every paved city street is on a three-year rotation, so we can continue to preserve our infrastructure and keep Safford moving smoothly.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we continue to improve our streets. Thank you for helping us keep Safford a great place to live, work, and visit.
