GRAHAM COUNTY – A Safford man was found deceased Tuesday morning, lying alongside Airport Road just west of Dry Lake Road. He appeared to have simply dropped while walking.

The deceased male was identified as Gene Cornelison. He lived nearby and was known to walk in the area.

A passerby saw Cornelison lying on the north side of the road at about 6:17 a.m. As he came upon him, The passerby said Cornelison’s leg was moving slightly but his pulse was very weak. After alerting 9-1-1, the passerby began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and was reportedly joined by a second person who assisted with chest compressions.

The first Graham County Sheriff’s Office deputy on the scene had a registered nurse riding with him, and she assisted with chest compressions as well until they were relieved by paramedics.

Emergency medical measures continued as Cornelison was transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center. While at the hospital staff were informed Cornelison had a DNR and all life-saving measures were stopped. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

According to a Graham County Sheriff’s Office report, the investigating deputy didn’t observe any trauma to Cornelison except for the back of his head (possibly caused when falling) and to his rib area which involved receiving chest compressions. Authorities were advised that Cornelison suffered from seizures. They believe the incident to have been a medical emergency.
