Rabies confirmed in bobcat near Timber Campground north of Globe

GILA COUNTY – Gila County Animal Care & Control has confirmed that a bobcat near the Timber Campground has tested positive for the rabies virus. If you were in this area and may have come into contact with this animal, please contact Gila County Animal Care & Control immediately at (928) 425-5882.

In response to this confirmed case, Animal Care & Control Officers have increased surveillance in the area to monitor for any additional rabies cases or abnormal animal behavior. Residents and visitors are urged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their pets from rabies exposure.

The best way to safeguard against rabies is to ensure that all pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Residents and visitors should also take extra precautions to avoid wildlife and unknown animals that may have been exposed to the virus.

Preventive Measures

• Keep pets vaccinated against rabies and do not allow them to roam freely.

• Avoid contact with wild animals or domestic animals that are behaving unusually.

• Teach children not to approach or touch wild or unfamiliar animals.

• If bitten or scratched by an animal, seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to Gila County Animal Care & Control.
