Morenci girls bound for Tucson-held sectional

TUCSON – Thirty-three schools will be represented, and 151 entrants will compete for the top four slots in each weight class on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Tucson Amphitheater campus is the site of the Division II – Section IV state qualifying meet beginning at 10 a.m.

There are 18 at 114, 17 at 132, 16 at 126, 15 at 120, 14 at 138 and 145, 13 at 152, 11 at 107, 10 at 100 and 165, eight at 185, and five at 235.

The progress report will be presented on this day, as the learning and experience-gathering process has come to an end. Whatever else needs to be addressed has been reviewed during the daily practice sessions.

Five Wildcats, freshman Lailani Strong (107), sophomore Peytin Colbell (126), sophomore Izabella Marquez-Curiel (132), sophomore Taytum Porter (152), and senior Cynthia Martinez (185) will represent their school and community.

Morenci competed in nine meets against other programs, the Poston Butte-held Arizona Cup on Nov. 29, the Willcox Jamboree on Dec. 1, the William Bell Invitational on Dec. 5-6, the Coolidge Multi-Meet on Dec. 9, the 2-day Show Low-held Witt Duels on Dec. 12-13, the New Mexico Rio Rancho Cleveland Conflict on Jan. 2-3, the Shelby Ray Tourney in Eagar on Jan. 9-10, the Show Low Jamboree on Jan. 13, and the Doc Wright Invitational on Jan. 16-17.

Pima entered Roughrider junior Brenna Taylor (114), sophomore Emma Loveless (120), sophomore Josie McEuen (126), and junior Maelee Woods (185).

The Safford Bulldogs include freshmen Alaya Acosta (152) and Lyla Lester (165).

Seven Thatcher Eagles are entered in junior Addison Stone (100), freshman Alannah Simoneaux (107), junior Abigail Reyes (114), sophomore Kamden Bryce (120), sophomore Elika Gonzales (126), sophomore  Alyssa Poague (132), and freshman Adalyn Spitzer (145).

The Willcox Cowgirls have four hopefuls in freshman Katelyn Millenaar(120), sophomore Haven Nicolaides (126), sophomore Ellis Truschke (132), and junior Lilyana Millenaar (138).

Tucson Salpointe Catholic has the most entrants with 11, and Rio Rico, Saint David, and Tucson schools Amphitheater, Catalina Foothills, and Saint Augustine Catholic have the fewest with one apiece.
