Letter to the Editor: Reader thanks Safford for commercial air service decision

Jon Johnson File Photo/Gila Herald: The clouds were on fire with the morning sunrise as the Grand Canyon Scenic Airlines' crew readies its plane for the inaugural commercial flight out of Safford Regional Airport on Jan. 6. Due to lack of funds the service is set to shutter at the end of September.

Dear Editor,

I completely agree with the Safford City Council’s decision to discontinue the Safford-to-Phoenix air service. Especially, since it had proven to be a financial flop from the very beginning.

Economics 101 – Can’t build a sustainable business based on government grants, taxpayer money, and private donations, and expect it to last once the money runs out.

In my opinion, there was never a valid reason to believe daily air service to Phoenix and back would be a profitable endeavor. Let alone two daily round-trip tickets, which means twice the expense.

Obviously, there isn’t a sufficient customer base to support such a project, and never has been.

The irresistible allure of temporary government grants and city taxpayer funds shouldn’t override ordinary business sense: If it looks too good to be true and the sales pitch seems a little skewed, then it’s probably a good idea to walk away before things get worse.

Thankfully, Safford’s City Council seemed to concur and stopped the bleeding.
