SAN CARLOS APACHE RESERVATION – Authorities on the San Carlos Apache Reservation have made an arrest in the homicide of a tribal member discovered near the entrance of the Apache Gold Casino.
The case began on Monday, Oct. 27, when the San Carlos Apache Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive man at approximately 2 p.m. off U.S. Highway 70, near the entrance to the Apache Gold Casino. Initial scene assessments raised suspicions, and the incident was quickly classified as a homicide after confirming the victim had died under suspicious circumstances.
The victim was identified as Jessie Russell Sr., a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Limited details about the circumstances of his death were released at the time, as investigators appealed to the public for any relevant information to aid the probe.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation, and more information will be shared as it becomes available,” a department spokesperson stated in an initial public release.
On Tuesday, Oct. 28, at approximately 4 p.m., the San Carlos Apache Police Department arrested a juvenile in connection with Russell’s death. The suspect is being charged at the tribal level, with additional federal charges potentially forthcoming as the investigation progresses.
At this time, no further details about the juvenile, the motive, or the specifics of the incident have been disclosed. The department emphasized that the case remains active, and they continue to seek information from the community.
