GREENLEE COUNTY – On Sunday, Feb. 23, Greenlee County Search and Rescue (SAR) teams were dispatched to the Upper Eagle Creek area following reports of a missing hunter. The search concluded tragically when the individual was discovered deceased near his vehicle, with authorities suspecting a medical issue as the cause of death.
The operation began after the hunter was reported lost, prompting a swift response from SAR volunteers. Upon locating the subject, it became evident that he had experienced a medical emergency, though specific details have not been released. The Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office has withheld the deceased’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office expressed their sympathies, saying, “We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the hunter during this difficult time.” They also extended gratitude to the dedicated SAR volunteers who braved the rugged terrain of Upper Eagle Creek to assist in the search. “A big thanks goes out to our Search and Rescue team for their tireless efforts and commitment to serving our community,” the statement added.
The Upper Eagle Creek area, known for its remote and challenging landscape, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks that can accompany such activities, even when close to familiar landmarks like a vehicle.
Authorities have not indicated any suspicion of foul play, and the investigation is expected to focus on confirming the medical circumstances surrounding the hunter’s death. Further updates may be provided as the Sheriff’s Office continues its inquiry.
