THATCHER — Eastern Arizona College head women’s basketball coach Angelica de Paulo has been named the 2026 NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year following a historic season that culminated in the program’s first national championship.
“Being named the Coach of the Year is well deserved and a tremendous honor,” said EA Athletic Director Paul Demuth. “What sets Coach de Paulo apart is that her impact goes far beyond the court. She is a remarkable leader who genuinely cares about her student-athletes, guiding them not only as competitors but as young women preparing for their futures.”
De Paulo led the Gila Monsters to a 33-2 record this season and the NJCAA Division I national title, marking a milestone achievement for the program. Eastern Arizona finished the year ranked No. 1 in the nation and was recognized for its dominant defense, allowing just 47.9 points per game.
At a monthly Eastern Arizona College Governing Board meeting, President Todd Haynie awarded Presidential Medals to de Paulo and her team.
“Angelica’s leadership and commitment to excellence have elevated our women’s basketball program to new heights,” Haynie said. “She has built a culture of resilience, accountability, and success that extends far beyond the court. We are incredibly proud of her and this well-deserved national recognition.”
Since taking over the program in 2022, de Paulo has compiled a 120-16 overall record, guided the team to three NJCAA national semifinal appearances, and secured the College’s first national championship in women’s basketball.

Eastern Arizona earned an at-large bid to the national tournament and entered as the No. 2 overall seed. The Gila Monsters defeated Southwestern Illinois, Southern Idaho, and Trinity Valley to advance to the championship game, where they beat New Mexico Junior College 57-51.
“It was a privilege to watch your team play this year,” said EA Governing Board Chairman Jeff Larson. “You created memories that will last a lifetime, and we congratulate and appreciate all that you have done.”
De Paulo was also named Coach of the Tournament, while sophomore guard Esmeralda Enriquez earned Most Valuable Player honors. Two players were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
