THATCHER — Eastern Arizona College commemorated Constitution Day with a powerful message about liberty, the rule of law, and the enduring relevance of the U.S. Constitution, delivered by Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick.
The annual event featured patriotic music from the EA Gila Monster Band, a stirring performance of “We the People” by the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and appearances by college and community leaders. Hosted by the Associated Students of Eastern Arizona College (ASEAC), the celebration was conducted by ASEAC President Vard Jensen of Globe, Ariz., and brought together students from EA and local high schools, faculty, and members of the public to reflect on the foundations of American democracy.
During his introduction of the keynote speaker, EA President Todd Haynie remarked:
“Every September, Eastern Arizona College commemorates Constitution Day by inviting guests to speak to our campus and community. Short of getting one of the original signers of the U.S. Constitution, we are truly honored to have Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick here to speak to us today.”
Justice Bolick, a nationally recognized jurist and constitutional scholar, was appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court in 2016 and retained by voters in 2018. He is a prolific legal writer and long-time advocate of constitutional rights, known for litigating landmark cases on school choice, property rights, free speech, and federalism.
In a keynote that blended humor, historical insight, and legal gravitas, Justice Bolick centered his remarks on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925), a case that affirmed the right of parents — not the state — to direct the upbringing and education of their children.
“This case illustrates how important our Constitution is,” said Justice Bolick. “It is a truly meaningful document — one that ensures that in a court of law, David can beat Goliath.”
Justice Bolick also spoke about the unique role of the judiciary in the American system of government, especially during times of political division and rapid change.
“It was a brilliant innovation on the part of the framers of our Constitution to create an independent body whose sole obligation is to the Constitution, not to the voters,” he said.
The Justice wore a David and Goliath-themed tie during his speech, symbolizing what he called “the core message of the U.S. Constitution.”
“Our Constitution enshrines the principle of a level playing field — of individual rights that are inviolate, even against the most powerful majority,” he explained.
Justice Bolick also acknowledged Graham County voters, saying:
“We had the most vigorous campaign against us ever mounted. We succeeded in winning our respective terms with roughly 58% of the votes statewide, but Graham County gave us by far our largest margin with 78%, so I am so grateful. If Justice King were here, she would thank you as well.”
Beyond constitutional law, Justice Bolick praised the College’s recent transition to offering four-year degrees and applauded the dedication of the local judiciary, singling out Graham County Superior Court Presiding Judge Michael D. Peterson as “one of the best trial judges in Arizona.”
Adding a personal touch, Bolick delighted the audience with his long-awaited visit to Taylor Freeze and closed his address with an enthusiastic “Go Monsters!”
